jennifer fucking lawrence doesn’t think that bisexual women can have sex with men or have kids, and then referred to bisexuality as a “lesbian phase”
but she said that she likes food! shes so quirky and relatable you cant criticize her! she makes funny faces sometimes! did i mention she likes food!
I tried to look up the context of this and the original magazine article is no longer on the internet. BUT I found someone quoting the relevant paragraph in full (i.e. not just the direct quote from JL) here:
“I suggest that in the original comics Mystique was written as a lesbian, to which Lawrence counters, “No! That’s the first time I’ve heard that. She has kids, she has night crawlers, and she sleeps with Magneto!” And then she jokes, “Unless I’m completely wrong, I mean, she is 100 years old, she definitely had time for a lesbian phase.”
The interviewer told her that Mystique was a LESBIAN and she reacts to the term LESBIAN. She knows that Mystique is not a LESBIAN because she’s had kids and sleeps with Magneto. Obviously this is still problematic, but it’s not like she doesn’t understand bisexuality - it just didn’t come up in this conversation at all from her POV. She doesn’t know that Mystique is canonically bisexual, which is kind of dumb since she plays her, and the possibility of bisexuality should have occurred to her, that’s also pretty dumb and speaks to wider issues of bi erasure, but she’s not saying anything about bisexual women not having sex with men or having kids.
She’s said a lot of really problematic things, including other biphobic things (though I didn’t research them, so who knows what the context was), I’m not defending her from that, I’m just SO EXHAUSTED with this tumblr “gotcha” “friendly reminder that your favorite is hateful and terrible” culture using out of context quotes to give themselves a pat on the back about how much they know about random celebrities’ prejudices and dumb mistakes.
basically: hate whatever celebrities you want, but cite your sources if you’re going to claim a reason to justify it
