I am incredibly boggled by the people trying to make some sort of shoestring argument that casting an amazing lady as Watson in Elementary is somehow homophobic. They must think that Sherlock is somehow not queerbaiting and homophobic?
Or do we not care what they did to the lesbian, because she’s a woman and thus unimportant to Attractive White Male Hoyay?
Do you know what’s not homophobic?
Casting a woman of color in a traditionally white male role in a mainstream television show. We have no indication here of anyone’s sexuality, or how the show is treating the subject. All we know is that Lucy Liu is awesome.Do you know what is homophobic?
Tittering into your palm about bromances and will-they-or-won’t-they (and they really, really won’t) male ‘subtext’ and taking that shit to the bank while you actually pull the ‘all that lesbian needed was to fall in love with a good dick’ trope completely and totally, forgive the pun, straight.
I don’t mind if people enjoy Sherlock. I, personally, do not and cannot. However, acknowledge that it is intensely problematic, both because of its (racist, sexist, homophobic) content and the attitude of its creator. It is not the holy grail of Sherlock Holmes; nothing is the holy grail of Sherlock Holmes!
